mic oechsner - biography

 born in 1956 in Munich, Bavaria

  Secondary Music School in Freising and Munich. At the age of 14 he heard "Minor Swing" (Reinhardt and Grappelli) for the first time. Final secondary-school examinations in 1978 und first musical contact with German "Sinti" musicians

 Actually Mic wanted to be a music teacher. He studied classical violin with W.Gieron, a member of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, composition with I.Gambarde (a student of G.Bialas), 2 years double bass, 2 years guitar and 2 years piano.

 In 1980 Mic was nominated for the music scholarship of the city of Munich and studied at Berklee School of Music, Boston, USA. Afterwards he stayed in New York for some time, playing in jam sessions and listening in Jazz clubs.

  In 1982 he did his first recording with his MUKHARA JAZZ QUARTETT. The band started to play gigs all over Europe. At the same time he worked as a jazz violin teacher at the Jazz School Munich und the Freies Musikzentrum München

  In autumn 1982 he sat in with the famous German folk band ZUPFGEIGENHANSEL. in the following three years he did large concert tours, 4 records, TV und radio productions (e.g."Einer wird gewinnen" with Hans-Joachim Kulenkampff). He founded the MIC OECHSNER QUARTET (with Paul Grabowsky) und worked as a musician in Munich Theaters. He composed ballett music for children, music for theater plays, songs for the cabaret "Frust Recycling", Modern Jazz tunes.
5 years he played with the cabaret FRUST RECYCLING, 2 years with "Jürgen Wuchner's String Project". He toured with the famous Austrian saxophonist Hans Koller, with Karl Berger and Janusz Stefanski.

  In 1990 Mic started a journalist career: He wrote a the report "Jazz in München" for the magazine PRINZ. In the same year he organized the Jazzfest München with Hannes Beckmann and founded the MÜNCHNER VIOLIN SUMMIT with Jörg Widmoser and Hannes Beckmann.

 In 1992 the French governement charged him to write a sinfonic composition for string orchestra "Le crie de la renarde". In the same year Mic founded his own record label MUKHARA MUSIC and did a duo cd with bass player Alex Haas.

  In 1993 Mic founded - together with singer Willie Jakob, guitar player Uli Graner, trombone player Leo Gmelch, percussionist Marika Falk and bass player Uwe Schwidewski - the famous Klezmer band NUNU! and formed the OECHSNER WEISS ENSEMBLES with the German Sintis Traubeli and Pizza Weiss. 

  In 1994/95 he organized concerts for the culture club "Bürgertreff Laim e.V."

  In 1995 he bought an old village school house in Idolsberg, Lower Austria. He started to renovate, rebuild an reopen the house as a "Culture Hotel", organized concerts and seminars.

  In 1996/97 he toured in Germany and Austria, composed music for theater and film, did radio and TV productions. He founded the open air festival IDOLSBERGER MUSIKSOMMER in Lower Austria, installed an "international Jazz strings seminar" to take place every year.

  In 1998 concerts in Germany, Hungary (EBU-Festival) and Israel (Intern. Klezmer Festival Zefat)

  In 1999/2000 concerts in Germany, Austria and France with his own bands

  In 2001 again journalist works for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, München

  In 2002 composition for Shakespeares play "The Storm", manager of the Munich Jazzclub Unterfahrt and journalist works for the Süddeutsche Zeitung

 In 2003 Mic recorded and produced his fourth CD, „Mon ami le gitan“ with his son Gidon, toured in Austria and Germany, wrote for SZ and music magazines, moved to Austria and started new projects with Austrian musicians. He was invited to the festival of Ole-Bull-Akademie, Voß, Norway. Additionally he started to work as a narrator in the "Waldviertler Geisterwerkstatt"

.  In 2004 Mic installed a "Jazz Training For String" in Vienna, founded the quartet GRAPPELLISSIMO! with the Viennese Sinti musicians Joschi Schneeberger and Striglo Stöger, played in clubs and festivals. Invitation to the "Süddeutsches Harfentreffen"

.    In 2005 he did concerts with Gipsy guitarist Harri Stojka, and with GRAPPELLISSIMO!.Togehter with guitar player Uli Graner he re-formed NUNU! and moved to Vienna.

   In 2006 Mic was invited by the Landesmusikdirektion Oberösterreich and by Musikschule Melk for Jazz string seminars. He started to develop the teaching system alternative strings (opening May 2006). His first record with MUKHARA JAZZ QUARTETT was released on CD (reunion tour in October) and he played concerts with GRAPPELLISSIMO und NUNU!

   2005 Recording: " Live at Jazzland Vienna", Konzerte mit Harri Stojka und Band (z.B. Staatsvertrags-Festakt Belvedere am 15.05.05), Gastspiele mit GRAPPELLISSIMO! in österreichischen Clubs. Neuformierung von NUNU! Übersiedelung nach Wien.

   2006 Invitation of Landesmusikdirektion Oberösterreich, Steiermark and Musikschule Melk for Jazz string seminars. Develloping the teaching concept alternative strings, Mic founded his institute in Mai 2006. His very first recording of MUKHARA JAZZ QUARTET came out on CD and he toured in Europe with GRAPPELLISSIMO!, ESC, NUNU! and Tribute To Stephane.

He bilt up the MUKHARA WORLD SOUND studio and composed for film and theater plays.
